Daylily Care

Daylilies are dependable, low-maintenance perennials that thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. While they tolerate a wide range of growing conditions, they produce the best blooms when they receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Water newly planted daylilies regularly during their first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, they are drought tolerant, though occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage healthier plants and more abundant flowering.

Keeping daylilies looking their best requires only minimal care. Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering and cut back finished flower scapes after the last bloom fades. Applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring can promote vigorous growth, while a light layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Every three to five years, divide mature clumps to reduce overcrowding, improve flowering, and create new plants to expand your garden or share with fellow gardeners.
